I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a strange, hard book to review, but I’m going to do my best to describe this unique thriller. The story centers on an unnamed woman who is traveling with her boyfriend Jake to meet his parents. During their time together, she starts to doubt the relationship. She also has to contend with a creepy caller who always leaves the same message on her voicemail. As the journey progresses, so do the amount of unexplainable, unsettling events.
The first half of this book was pretty dull and I’ll admit I almost DNF’ed it. The second half really picks up, though, and the tension and horror escalate. Iain Reid crafted a wonderfully twisty, thought-provoking narrative, and the descriptions are detailed. It reminded me of the works of Michel Faber and Stephen King. I enjoyed how things were wrapped up, but can’t see myself returning to this novel due to the underwhelming first half and an understanding of the events and themes that are contained within. I do recommend giving it a read if you’re looking for something unique and smart to pick up.
