What a beautifully told story of survival and love. The Mountain Between Us focuses on two individuals: Ben Payne, a surgeon, and Ashley Knox, a journalist. Their flights are canceled due to heavy snow, so they decide to hitch a ride on a private plane. Disaster soon strikes, though, and they’re left deserted in the mountains. They both suffer from severe injuries, and have to figure out how to reach civilization before the conditions kill them.
I loved Charles Martin’s writing. This reads like a survival guide, but also manages to throw in heart-warming (and breaking) romance. I loved both characters, and kept turning the pages to find out the fates of Ben and Ashley. I was satisfied after I turned the final page, and am now intrigued in reading more of Martin’s work. My only complaint I have with this novel is the fact that some parts drag, while others speed by so fast it’s hard to take in what has just happened. This didn’t detract too much from my overall enjoyment of the book, though, and I highly recommend it.
