Beautiful Animals is a beautiful, if flawed, thriller. The story follows two young women, Naomi and Sam, as they vacation on the Greek island of Hydra. One day, they find a refugee on the beach and decide to help him out. Of course, things don’t go as smoothly as they had hoped…
I have mixed feelings about this novel. On one hand, I adored the evocative, beautiful writing. I felt like I was on Hydra with Naomi and Sam, and could practically feel the sun on my skin, taste the alcohol on my tongue, and smell the fragrant flowers. I also enjoyed the fast pace of the book, and I was constantly flipping the pages to find out what was going to happen. On the other hand, I found the story to be extremely predictable, and I didn’t like any of the characters. They were all awful and self-centered, and I didn’t really care about any of their fates.
A fun summer read that sadly didn’t live up to my expectations, Beautiful Animals is worth a read if you like fast-paced mystery/thrillers and are looking to be transported to a beautiful location. Otherwise, this is a pretty average thriller with unlikable characters.
