Hard Candy (2005) Film Review | 365 Day Film Challenge – Day 53

I went into this film not knowing what to expect, and boy, was I completely shocked by Hard Candy. The story follows a fourteen year old girl named Hayley (played by Ellen Page), who has been engaging in flirtatious chat sessions with a guy named Jeff (Patrick Wilson). The problem? He’s thirty-two, and Hayley agrees to meet up with him. What happens next was surprising and is worth not being spoiled.

Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson were both fantastic as their respective characters, and both brought shades of gray to a morally dubious film. The story was also powerful and compelling. Tightly coiled and suspenseful, I never knew what was going to happen next. There was one scene that left me feeling very uncomfortable, even though nothing is shown.

I was thoroughly surprised by Hard Candy, and the only problem I had with it was the ending. The film is, for the most part, excellently paced and intense, but the ending fell flat for me. If you’re looking for a great thriller to watch, though, Hard Candy should be added to your watchlist.

Verdict: 4/5
