I just watched this film for the first time, and I’m in love with it. In my own personal opinion, it’s Zack Snyder’s best work. Starring Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, and Michael Fassbender (swoon…), 300 is adapted from Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name and follows King Leonidus (Butler) as he prepares for battle against King Xerxes and the Persian Army.
This is a gorgeous film, as per usual with Snyder’s aesthetic. I loved the bright colors and splashes of red against the golden backdrop. Limbs fly and blood spurts gorgeously (I’m weird, ok?!), and the effects are incredible. Plus, lots of sweaty, bare-chested men in loincloths fighting…
The acting is solid, and I adored the cast. They each brought depth and emotions to their respective characters, and made me genuinely care about their fate. Lena Headey stole the show as Queen Gorgo, though. Strong, independent, and willing to stand up against any man, she shone.
Will everyone love this film? No. It’s not a particularly deep film, and if you don’t like gore and violence (which, to be honest, wasn’t as bad as I was expecting), you’ll probably not enjoy your time with 300. If you love fun, action-packed sword and sandals epics with awesome effects and a great cast, though, you’ll love this film.
Verdict: 4/5
