Yoga Hosers (2016) Film Review | 365 Day Film Challenge – Day 29

I went into this film with zero expectations and came out of it with a smile on my face and “WTF?!” swimming through my mind. Yoga Hosers follows two teenagers, both named Colleen, (Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp), who work at Eh-2-Zed, a convenience store. They’re obsessed with yoga, their phones, and music, and all of these become valuable items in their arsenals as they fight an ancient evil presence that is unleashed upon Winnipeg (and also ruins their plans of attending a senior party).

There is definitely a reason why this film is so divisive. The movie is just effing weird, to start with. The story is outlandish, the editing will drive some people crazy, and the characters aren’t entirely likable. Those factors are why I enjoyed this film, though. Yoga Hosers is a breath of fresh air in an industry focused on superheroes and grim subject matter.

The all-star cast is fantastic, and the loving digs at Canada are hilariously sweet. I loved seeing Adam Brody, Johnny Depp, Tyler Posey, and Austin Butler play characters so different from their usual oeuvre, and Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp shine.

This film definitely isn’t for everyone, and it definitely has flaws. If you like original, creative movies with fantastic casts and outlandish concepts, you’ll find something to love about Yoga Hosers. It’s a bright, colorful, fun Kevin Smith creation, and if you want to take a cinematic risk, I definitely recommend this film.

Verdict: 3.5/5
