This is one of my absolute favorite films, and every time I re-watch this masterpiece I fall a little more in love with it. Created by Joss Whedon as a web series during the infamous Writer’s Strike of 2008, Dr. Horrible stars Neil Patrick Harris as the titular wannabe villain. Too bad he’s not very threatening and has a major weakness: he’s head over heels in love with Penny (Felicia Day) and the whole world knows it, due to the fact that he advertises it on his blog. Penny FINALLY notices him one day, only for his worst enemy, the hunky Captain Hammer (the magnificent Nathan Fillion), swoops in and steals her heart to spite our beloved Dr. Horrible.
The soundtrack to this movie is outstanding (so much so that I own a physical copy). The songs are catchy and will get stuck in your head, and you’ll be annoying people constantly with your repeated karaoke performances of them (that might just be me though…).
Neil Patrick Harris is phenomenal as Dr. Horrible. He may be a terrible villain, but he’s a lovable, sincere guy that you root for. Nathan Fillion is incredible as Captain Hammer, portraying him as cocky and arrogant (flipping the superhero/villain trope on its head). I also liked Felicia Day as Penny. She has a lovely voice and brought a girl next door vibe to her character.
This is a creative, wonderful film that captivates you and holds you in its grasp for its short run time. You’ll be singing and dancing along, and you’ll definitely laugh your ass off.
