Captain America: Civil War | 100 Day Film Challenge – Day 97

It took me FOREVER to see this film, but man, am I glad I finally watched it. Directed by the Russo Brothers, Civil War sees Captain America, aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Iron Man, aka Tony Stark (RObert Downey Jr.) at odds over the Sokovia Accords after Bucky “The Winter Soldier” Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is suspected of murdering the king of Wakanda. Cap is against it; Tony believes the Avengers should be held accountable for their actions. The team splits up into sides and faces off in a magnificent film that explores the bonds of friends and teammates, and examines the nature of being a hero.

The acting is superb, and even though the cast is packed, the film never feels overstuffed. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. both present compelling evidence as their characters for their side of the argument, and the rest of the Avengers show strength and fragility as they both stand up for their beliefs and examine the effects their actions have on the world as a whole. Chadwick Boseman and Tom Holland shine as Black Panther and Spider-Man, respectively, and leave you hungry for their upcoming standalone movies.

The effects are dazzling and awe-worthy. The visuals are astounding, and you feel like you’re right there in the middle of the chaos and rubble with the Avengers.

The only little niggle I had with this film was the length. I felt like it was a little too long for its own good, but the film still worked and the story was compelling enough to keep me watching. Also, if you’re not up to date with the previous films in the current Marvel line-up, you’ll definitely be confused.

This is one of the best comic book movies I’ve ever seen, and the best of the current slate of Disney/Marvel films. Civil War isn’t just about superheroic actions; it’s about family, friendship, and the consequences of our actions. This is a must-watch film, even if you’re usually not a fan of comic book movies. Just make sure you’re up to date with the current slate of films.

Verdict: 4.5/5
