Holy Hell (2016) Film Review | 100 Day Film Challenge – Day 82

Holy Hell is directed by Will Allen, who joined the Buddhafield cult at age twenty-two when he was kicked out of his home for being gay. The documentary focuses on the cult and what occurred during Allen’s stay, as well as what happened to other members.

The cult was based in West Hollywood lead by a man named Michel (who was revealed to be a failed actor and former gay porn star). Michel performed Shakti on his followers, which basically made them feel like they were tripping on LSD. It was later revealed that he made straight young men in the cult have sex with him and forced female members to have abortions.

This is a fascinating, disturbing documentary, and it’s definitely interesting to see how one man could enchant so many people and basically create his own cult. My attention did wane at points, but I was intrigued overall.

I wasn’t crazy about how the movie was filmed and the editing, but those are small personal nitpicks. If you’re interested in the psychological aspect of cults and to see what occurred in the Buddhafield family, definitely give Holy Hell a watch.

Verdict: 3.5/5
