After watching Chasing Amy, I decided to watch another Kevin Smith film… and that film was Clerks.
Clerks follows Dante and Randal, two, well, clerks who work at a video-rental/convenience store. The entire film occurs during one night, where tons of crazy shit is brought to light.
I thought the cinematography was amazing. I adored the black and white aesthetic, and Kevin Smith’s clean, simple directorial style made it seem like I was there with the guys at the store.
The acting was mostly good. A few performances were dodgy, but I liked most of the characters and identified with their struggles.
I have the same issues with this film as I did with Chasing Amy, though. There’s WAY too much talk about sex, and I started to feel bored at points. I don’t even know how many times I heard about blow jobs, intercourse, and masturbation in this film. I just wish that the narrative went deeper into the character’s lives and motivations.
I enjoyed Clerks, but didn’t love it. I adored the black and white aesthetic, and for the most part enjoyed the acting. The film elicited a few chuckles from me, but the sex talk was way too much.
Verdict: 3.5/5
Still funny all of these years later. Even if Smith’s mystique has ran dry. Nice review.
