Starship Troopers (1997) Film Review | 100 Day Film Challenge – Day 64

Paul Verhoeven knocked it out of the park once again! Starship Troopers is my personal favorite film of his now, and even though it’s completely different from the source material, it’s a highly entertaining, cutting-edge sci-fi film.

The story revolves around a future society where high school students are vetted to join the military and fight against the hordes of insects threatening the planet. Casper Van Dien stars (and was he a dreamboat!), and Neil Patrick Harris, Denise Richards, and Jake Busey cut their teeth with supporting roles. Some of the acting was hammy, but for the most part was actually well-done.

The visuals are spectacular, especially considering the era in which the film was made. The insects look incredible, and the action scenes are full of excitement and momentum.

Some may complain about how thin the story is, but this film isn’t about that. Starship Troopers is for anyone looking for a fun, badass science fiction film with incredible visuals and a young, pretty, and talented cast.

Verdict: 4/5
