Total Recall (1990) | 100 Day Film Challenge – Day 54

I know, I know. I just now watched Paul Verhoeven’s classic sci-fi film, and I adored it. Arnold Schwarzenegger was fantastic as Douglas Quaid, a man who wants to travel to Mars. He goes to have a holiday at Rekall Inc., only to learn his memory had been erased and he’s actually a secret agent named Hauser who’s already been to Mars. All chaos breaks loose as the evil Cohaagen hunt him down.

The effects are pretty cheesy compared to today’s standards, but were influential for the time period. For the most part, this movie has aged pretty well. The action sequences were badass, and a lot of the technology was sleek and advanced. Some of the dialogue was corny, but it made me laugh regardless.

The story is entertaining, and the supporting cast help anchor the film. Sharon Stone is great as Quaid’s wife/ sexy double agent, Rachel Ticotin shined as Hauser’s true love, and Ronny Cox was a menacing villain.

Overall, I enjoyed Total Recall. The acting was good, and the film mostly holds up. Besides a few cheesy effects and a couple of lines didn’t hit the nail on the head, but this is still a fun sci-fi thrill ride.

Verdict: 4/5
