Ashby (2015) Movie Review | 100 Day Film Challenge – Day 24

Directed by Tony McNamara and starring Nick Nolte, Nat Wolff, Emma Roberts, and Sarah Silverman, Ashby centers around a young man named Ed (Wolff). He has just moved to a new town, and he receives an assignment to befriend a local resident and write a report about his experience. He chooses to cover his kooky neighbor Ashby (Nolte), who just so happens to be a retired CIA assassin and only has three months left to live. Along the way, he develops feelings for a girl (Roberts) and finds himself.

The premise of this film is unique, but the execution falls flat. This is an enjoyable, yet formulaic, movie about discovering yourself. The acting is solid, if not career best performances for any of the cast. Nolte and Wolff have good chemistry, though, and make a believable odd pair.

If you’re looking for a feel-good movie to watch, Ashby is a perfectly serviceable choice. Just don’t go in with high expectations.

Verdict: 3/5

Ashby is available to stream on US Netflix
