Colonia (2015) | 100 Day Film Challenge – Day 21

WOW. That’s the first word that comes to mind when thinking of this film. I went in not expecting much and ended up seriously impressed. Colonia is directed by Florian Gallenberger and stars Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl and is inspired by true events.

Colonia follows a young woman named Lena (Watson), who is visiting Chile to support her boyfriend Daniel (Bruhl). While there, he is captured and taken to Colonia Dignidad, a cruel sect where prisoners were tortured and often killed. She joins the sect herself to rescue him. The problem? No one has ever escaped.

Watson and Bruhl were magnificent in this film. They had amazing chemistry and made the characters relatable. I was cheering for them to escape and have a happy ending. Michael Nyqvist was chilling as the leader of the sect, Paul “Pious” Schafer.

This film doesn’t shy away from brutality, showing incredible acts of abuse and torture. This may put some viewers off, but it doesn’t feel cheap or added in for shock value.

Colonia is a powerful film, based on horrifically true events. With powerhouse performances and a captivating story, this is a must watch.

Verdict: 4/5

Colonia is available to stream on US Netflix
