Dark City (1998) | 100 day Film Challenge – Day 20

I didn’t really know what to expect with this film going on, and I was pleasantly surprised… and mindfucked.

Dark City is directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow) and stars Rufus Sewell as a man who awakens in a bathtub with no clue who he is, where he is, or what he has done. A manhunt is out on him, and he must figure out what the hell is going on. The sun never shines, and human souls are being stolen.

This film also stars Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly. They both give serviceable performances, sometimes over-acting, but usually on point.

The visuals remind me of Blade Runner; grimy, dark, and futuristic. I loved this dystopian theme and thought it fit the film perfectly.

I feel like I need to watch Dark City again, to pick up details I may have missed during the first viewing. I was gripped from start to finish, and I felt like a part of this weird world.

Verdict: 3.5/5
