The Double stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, and Wallace Shawn and is directed by Richard Ayode. The story revolves around a man named Simon James (Eisenberg) who is living a typical 9-to-5 life and is pining after a woman he works with (Wasikowska). His life is quickly turned upside down though, after he witnesses a man commit suicide and a guy who looks exactly like him named James Simon (Eisenberg again) is hired at his workplace.
This film is beautifully shot and well-acted. Every shot feels grimy and intense. This is Eisenberg’s best performance to date, in my opinion. He sells both men extremely well, and makes you feel for both of them.
The Double definitely isn’t for everyone. The narrative isn’t explained outright, requiring the viewer to pay attention and work out what is happening themselves.
I personally adored this film, and got major Brazil/ Predestination vibes from it. I loved the grimy aesthetic, and was captivated by the actors. If you like cerebral films, definitely give The Double a watch. Just don’t blink.
Verdict: 4/5
